The Two-Year College Education Committee is a standing committee of the ACM Education Board. The Committee is concerned with all education issues that affect computing at two-year colleges and in two-year degree programs. The primary purpose of the Committee is to provide curriculum recommendations in all areas of computing for such degree programs. The Committee may also make recommendations on other educational matters affecting such programs. |

2. SUMMARY (FY 97) |
| 2.1 NSF UFE Grant | |
In June 1996 the Committee submitted a successful NSF Faculty Enhancement grant proposal to conduct four workshops at four different geographical locations within the United States for two-year college and small four-year college faculty, instructional support staff and instructional computing administrators. The workshops dealt with emerging technologies, resource management, and instructional methodologies. All four two-day workshops were conducted during June and July, 1997. There were a total of 118 participants. Three of the workshops had waiting lists of potential participants. The workshop reviews were very positive. The primary workshop facilitators were Karl Klee, Robert Campbell and C. Fay Cover. Joyce Currie Little and Richard Austing assisted with some of the details. Each workshop had guest facilitators with an expertise in the topic of distance learning. |

| 2.2 Updating the 1993 Curriculum Reports for Associate Degree Programs | |
The Committee submitted a SDF proposal to the SIG Board on October 15, 1996. The proposal included a 20K funding request to update the Computing for Other Disciplines 1993 curriculum report. The plan was to organize a Strategic Summit where a group of professional is formed with representatives from two-year colleges, industry, and organizations such as SIG3C, SIGCSE, CCSC, AMATYC, etc. to determine the current status and detail associate-level recommendations relative to computing for other disciplines. We planned to use 3C ONLINE, the publication of SIG3C, to help obtain meaningful feedback from a group of two-year colleges computing faculty. Unfortunately the SIG Board turned down the funding request. |
| 2.3 Supporting SIG3C | |
| The Committee continued to lend support to SIG3C primarily through a Committee column as well as other Committee articles published in 3C ONLINE. | |
3. PLANS (FY '98) |
| 3.1 Community College Initiative: | |
The Committee, in conjunction with SIG3C, has made a proposal to the SIGCSE Symposium Committee to sponsor a special series of panel discussions and workshops at SIGCSE '98 designed specifically to address the two-year college environment. All expenses pertaining to the initiative (including promotional mailings) would be paid by SIGCSE. The proposal is based upon the very successful Community College Initiative at the 1996 SIGCSE Symposium in Philadelphia. The Committee will be coordinating the submission of two panel presentations, one workshop proposal, and a birds-of-a-feather proposal for SIGCSE 98. |
| 3.2 NSF UFE Proposal | |
The Committee submitted another Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement to NSF as a follow-up to this years series of workshops. This proposal requests funding to conduct four regional two-day workshops during June and July 1997 dealing primarily with the topic of Distance Learning. The Committee is currently working on a proposal to extend this topic as a basis of an NSF ATE (Advanced Technological Education) proposal. |
3.3 Presentation at the Asymetrix Conference |
The Committee has submitted a proposal for a conference presentation at the September Asymetrix Conference in Seattle WA dealing with the topic of multimedia. To date, the Committee has not heard about the status of the proposal. |
| 3.4 SDF Grant Proposal | |
The Committee is planning to submit another SIG Discretionary Fund proposal on October 15, 1997 to request 20K funding to update the Computer Support Services Associate Level curriculum report. There is a renewed interest at two-year colleges in setting up new degree programs in the area of Computer Support Services. The Committees 1993 report, published by ACM press, is not only out of print, but it also has become outdated and in need of revision. The Committee has been receiving many requests for an up-to-date version of the 1993 Computer Support Services report. |
| 3.5 Articulation | |
The Committee will continue to deal with the very important topic of articulation. The topic of articulation includes not only the two-year to four-year program articulation, but also the high school to two-year college articulation. The Committee has conducted and will continue to conduct panel sessions at major conferences dealing with the issue of articulation. |
