1.2 PURPOSE:

The Two-Year College (TYC) Education Committee is a standing committee (since October, 1991) of the ACM Education Board. The Committee is concerned with all education issues that affect computing at two-year colleges and in two-year degree programs. The primary purpose of the Committee is to provide curriculum recommendations in all areas of computing for such degree programs. The Committee may also make recommendations on other educational matters affecting such programs.

1.3 SUBUNITS:

The Committee has no subcommittees or subunits. The Committee works collaboratively with a number of TYC colleagues with subject area expertise as well as other professionals to accomplish the breadth of its undertakings.

Note: While detailed budget information is not available, the Committee's fiscal year budget of $10,000 was fully expended. It is important to note that the Committee engaged in some collaborative efforts with the AACC, which provided significant supplemental funding support.

3. PLANS

3.1 Projects that will be completed or terminated in the coming year:

  • TYC IS has report is being printed and distributed nationally. Dissemination efforts will be ongoing in 2004-2005.
  • TYC SE report is under development, as an accompaniment to CCSE report.

3.2 Milestones in active projects during the coming year:

  • TYC IS report has been distributed nationwide; dissemination efforts at conferences will be conducted in Fall 2004 and Spring 2005.
  • TYC SE report draft is expected to be out for review in Spring 2005
  • TYC CE report framework is expected to be drafted in Spring 2005.

3.3 New projects or programs which are proposed or contemplated:

  • The TYC CE report will be a joint effort with the IEEE-CS TYC Committee.
  • The ACM TYC EC has been charged by the Ed Board with pursuing internationalization of the TYC work. Strategies for such efforts will be formulated in Fall 2004.
  • A TYC Cybersecurity curriculum proposal has been submitted to AACC/NSF for consideration. TYC Cybersecurity workshop dissemination efforts (funded by AACC) have concluded.
  • The TYC Computing in a Networked Environment report is due for update and revision, possibly as a TYC Information Technology (IT) report.
  • An overarching TYC curriculum report framework is under consideration.

4. COMMENTS

We appreciate the ongoing funding support from the ACM Ed Board and we are pleased that we have been able to supplement funding through collaborative ventures. The Committee's website can be found at www.acmtyc.org.
